The Moon Cannot Be Stolen

from A Moment of Thought by Pascal van den Dool

/

lyrics

There once was a man
Not by a single thing deluded
What needs a man in a lifespan?
Sole the earth's gifts he concluded

(Thoughtful, at peace, river, moonlight)
He walked up the mountain at night
And savoured the trees in the moonlight

Meanwhile a thief came to steal
But saw nothing there to his grief

Thus it seemed like a pointless ordeal
The man came back and said to the thief:

"You've come from far I suppose"
In him, compassion arose
Said: "take as a gift all my clothes"

There once was a man
Not by a single thing deluded
What needs a man in a lifespan?
Sole the earth's gifts he concluded

So without any kind of affray
The man sat naked by the lagoon
Thinking about the thief who just ran away
"If only I could give him this beautiful moon"
